Tourney time!

IMG_0554

Oh yes indeed, that rarest of rare annual events is almost upon us – no, not Christmas (although, while we are on the subject, only 4 more sleeps – eeeeeek!). No, I refer of course to my once yearly attendance of a 40k tournament!

This year, i have left it a bit late to try and get along to something, but as i was moving across the planet and rebuilding a house for most of this year i think getting to the party a little it late is excusable.

Since arriving back in south wales i have been looking at a number of gaming clubs to try and get along to and check out in the hopes of meeting some long term gaming chums to crush merciless underfoot and drink in their salty tears get some causal games against. Lucky for me Cardiff has a great FLGS easily accessible from the city centre that runs plenty of events and has a number of clubs running out of it (they also do X-Wing, Armada and Bolt Action, which is a real boon as these are my other hobby vices). Firestorm Games has a great discount shop, as well as a massive gaming area and even a bar serving ice cold pints of purest welsh beer continental larger. If you are ever down in the ‘diff, i highly recommend you check it out.

One such group operating out of their oh so welcoming fold are the Cardiff Wargames Club , who are running their annual Christmas tournament ‘Fish of Doom’. The tournament itself seems to be pretty laidback and the rules are pretty simple – just as well, as these will be my first real games of 8th edition and I will require some gentle breaking in. It is basically 3 game using the Open Play card deck, with lists constructed using power levels – in this case, 120 PL.

Now I have not used power levels before, so this should be an interesting experience for me. In 7th i almost always favoured ‘boys over toys’, so power levels will allow me to have a go with units tooled up to the absolute max in accessories, which will be a nice change. I have decided to take my Tau along, as they still offer me the widest choice in terms of painted models. The only other option was Dark Angels, but as i have only just received the codex i wanted a bit more time to absorb it (which i probably wont get till well after the Christmas madness has subsided). Anyway, on to the list:

Tau: Fire Warriors from the Setpworld of Fi’Rios, 120PL

Thinking:

So as you see, it is a fairly suit heavy list (again, something new for me) trying to make a fluffy attempt at Kauyon. Plenty of troops to act as the lure, and lots of suits to come hammering in and spring the trap. Whether this actually works on the table or not is another thing, as i imagine it will just descend into the usual bloodbath and carnage.

HQs

I make no bones about having 4 commanders in here – it is a bit spammy, but the current meta for Tau seems to be to take 9 commanders all with fusion blasters and alpha strike the crap out of your opponent before he steam roles you. This doesn’t sound like much fun, so I have taken just one fusion ‘mander, one ‘all rounder’ mander (who will be my warlord) and two old fashioned Mark’Os (intended to provide markerlight and long range fire support). Far from the most efficient setup, but also not going to make anyone rage quite either.

Troops:

Kroot and fire warriors, pretty cheap and will give me some table presence / objective holders. Loss of infiltrate & sniper rounds on the kroot hurts them a lot but they are just cannon fodder anyway.

Elites:

So the main strength of my list – here be the crisis teams, who benefit greatly from playing power levels. One plasma team and one fusion team, ready to drop in and melt anything they care to. Riptide is massively over costed, but i want to use him because A) its still a cool model, B) i invested money and time in painting him, and C) it is also pretty durable now (if not quite as hard hitting as it once was) Stealth team also for harassing weak units and homing beacon shenanigans.

Fast attack:

Piranhas because they are great for zipping around grabbing objectives, and also benefitted from becoming more durable in 8th. Pathfinders too, for some more markerlight support. They also have become so cheap in this edition that there really is no reason not to take them.

Flyer:

Barracuda! I have had this for ages, only ever used it once (and even then as a sunshark proxy) and since FW is allowed at the tourney (but no LoW) i thought i would give it an outing. Just means i have to get it painted up before then, but hopefully it shouldn’t be a problem.

So there we have it, a fairly fluffy casual list with some strong elements but nothing to induce salty teared nerd rage except from the most ardent of Tau hater. Tourney is on the 28th, so will try to post up some kind of report before the new year.
